PRODUCTIVE VERHANDLUNGEN

THE ARCTIC COUNCIL

1. THE ARCTIC COUNCIL IS THE LEADING INTERGOVERNMENTAL FORUM PROMOTING COOPERATION, COORDINATION AND INTERACTION AMONG THE ARCTIC STATES, ARCTIC INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND OTHER ARCTIC INHABITANTS ON COMMON ARCTIC ISSUES.

2. THE HUMAN DIMENSION OF THE ARCTIC COUNCIL'S WORK COVERS A WIDE ARRAY OF AREAS, FROM MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION AND GENDER EQUALITY.

3. THE MEMBERS OF THE ARCTIC COUNCIL ARE THE EIGHT ARCTIC STATES AND THE SIX INDIGENOUS PERMANENT PARTICIPANT ORGANIZATIONS.

THE SESSIONS OF THE PERMANENT FORUM

The committee discussed a recommendation made by the delegation of the People's Republic of China to create an internal committee in each country with the objective_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b_cc79d8cf58-136bad5cf58 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_the nature of indigenous languages.

Additionally, the delegates worked on two more recommendations on the protection of indigenous languages, which were submitted for review and vote by the Forum.

During the second day, the issue of indigenous resources and territories was discussed, based mainly on the exploitation of these territories for the good of the countries, as well as whether or not prior free and informed consent is necessary . At the moment, two recommendations are being worked on that must be accepted by the Forum to be included in the final report.

5 ENVIRONMENTAL CONFLICTS WITH THE GREATEST IMPACT FOR THE PLANET

  1. The toxic waste spill in Minas Gerais (Brazil). It has affected the indigenous populations who have been demanding due environmental reparations since 2015.

  2. Garbage incineration systems in China without the proper safety standards, causing serious damage to the environment and health.

  3. Opencast coal mining in South Africa. It has generated serious consequences, in terms of the loss of sacred places, homes and means of subsistence for local communities.

  4. Land appropriation in Guatemala. It has restricted access to the territory of the indigenous population, who have protested for respect for their rights and those of nature.

  5. The Agua Zarca reservoir in Honduras. The Lenca population is fighting to stop this practice and for justice to be done in the murder of the main activist of this indigenous community,  Berta Cáceres.
